Dixwell Avenue Congregational Church is the oldest formally recognized African America Congregational Church in America. It was founded by a 20 year old white abolitionist( Rev. Simeon Jocelyn) and 24 former slaves. Rev. Simeon S. Jocelyn (his brother Nathaniel painted the famous portrait of Joseph Cinque) and Rev. James Pennington, the first African American Pastor of Dixwell Church, were both members of the famous 1839 Amistad Committee. This committee fought for the equal rights of all people.
