Statement from President Martin B. Copenhaver

October 28, 2018
Dear Friends of Andover Newton,
I invite you to join me in expressing outrage and condemnation for the senseless killing of worshipers at Tree of Life Synagogue in Pittsburgh.  I am equally confident you will join me in offering deepest sympathy to all who are affected—beginning with the families of the victims, then to all members of Tree of Life Synagogue, to all of our Jewish brothers and sisters, and to all victims of hate.  In this time we must draw on the best of our religious traditions, which can be the wellsprings of compassion and justice, to fight hatred with everything we do and everything we have.  In doing so, I pray we will heed the words of Martin Luther King, Jr.:  “Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only love can do that.  Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.”
Shalom, for all,
Martin B. Copenhaver
